Payette to receive new Flashing Yellow Arrow signals at U.S. 95 intersections this week
BOISE - Several years ago, a Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA) traffic signal was installed at U.S. 30 and Allen Street in Fruitland. Now, two are planned in Payette this week: a new one at U.S. 95 and Idaho 52 tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 23) and an upgraded signal at U.S. 95 and 7th Street Thursday (Oct. 25).

“The
FYA signal is more efficient,” Southwest Idaho Traffic Engineer
Kevin Sablan said. “It moves traffic through more quickly, and reduces the
frustration for waiting drivers.” Sablan also said the signal saves on
motorists' fuel and time at the intersection.
The flashing yellow arrow means, "proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic."
The signal has four phases:
1. Green arrow represents a protected turn
2. Flashing yellow arrow - proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic
3. Solid Yellow arrow - prepare to stop
4. Solid Red arrow - stop
Flashing
yellow arrows indicate a permissive move for drivers turning left; they
can make a left turn but must yield to oncoming traffic.
The FYA signals are already in place in many southwest Idaho towns, and are added as part of new construction or when funds allow for a replacement, Sablan said. They have been added in recent years to intersections in Emmett, Mountain Home, McCall, Nampa, Fruitland, Meridian, Boise and Nampa.
