Idaho eighth-grade girls to explore engineering field at ITD Thursday
BOISE - Eighth-grade girls from across Idaho will learn about the engineering field from professionals when the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) holds its 2013 Engineering Girls Day Thursday (Feb. 21) at ITD Headquarters in Boise.

Nineteen middle-school students from Homedale, Caldwell, Boise, Nampa, Kimberly (near Twin Falls) and Ammon (near Idaho Falls) are expected to attend the education outreach event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This kind of early career exposure may help some of these girls set career paths they had not considered, explains Michelle George, ITD senior human resources specialist.

“Our department volunteers work hard to make this activity fun and educational for the girls,” George said. “It’s a great way for these students to see the many career opportunities available in the engineering field and transportation industry and, at the same time, have a little fun.”

The students will participate in a guided whiteboard planning activity and tour the department’s materials labs to learn about chemistry, structures, aggregate and asphalt mix.

ITD staffers will be available to talk about the department’s “profiler” van, a typical snowplow and an Incident Response truck. Students also will get to test their skills moving virtual snow in the department’s snowplow simulator.
