17.5-mile stretch of Idaho 52 and Idaho 16 in Payette and Gem counties to be resurfaced this summer

BOISE - A project this summer will preserve the pavement in a 17.5-mile stretch of highway running through Payette and Gem counties on Idaho 16 and 52.

Crews will apply a SAFLEA (Stress-Absorbing Fiberglass Layer with Emulsified Asphalt) and Hot Mix Asphalt overlay to the highway surface. The SAFLEA treatment is a seal coat with a coating of chopped glass fibers between the oil and gravel aggregates to enhance durability and reduce cracking.

The work on Idaho 52 is from Hamilton's Corner to the intersection of highways 52 and 16, and on Idaho 16 from that intersection south by a mile and a half to the spot where last year's overlay stopped. Click here for a map of the project location.

Crews will also update guardrail, do soft-spot repair, update the traffic signals with video detection and level a bump in the road just west of Emmett.

Most work during this two-month project will take place during daylight hours on weekdays, but nighttime and weekend work is not prohibited if needed. On any work overlapping Idaho 16, work will be prohibited during weekday morning and evening rush hours.

The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph through the immediate area of construction.

To minimize interference with local events, the project work will be suspended during the Emmett Cherry Festival June 12-15, the Emmett Cruise Night July 20, the Gem/Boise County Fair July 31-Aug. 3 and the Firebird Nightfire Nationals Aug. 8-11.
