Pile-driving tests start next week near Broadway Interchange

BOISE - Drivers will see and hear signs of work near the Broadway Interchange next week, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. Crews will conduct pile-driving tests in the Interstate 84 median on Thursday and Friday (March 21 and 22).

Three steel piles will be mounted to a crane and hammered deep into the ground. The test results will assist ITD in determining the foundation type to use for the new railroad bridge structure. The interchange is slated for reconstruction in 2014.

Crews will move equipment in today (Thursday, March 14) and prepare the median over the next several days.

Pile-driving tests will be restricted to daytime hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.). The tests generate vibration and noise comparable to that of a garbage truck (about 90 to 100 decibels).

Construction is expected to begin in early 2014 and be complete by fall 2015. ITD also will reconstruct the Gowen Road and Meridian Road interchanges, and widen I-84 between Broadway and Gowen interchanges.

Additional public meetings will be scheduled this summer when the design plans are completed.
The projects are funded with savings from the GARVEE Transportation Program. To learn more, visit http://itd.idaho.gov/projects/garvee/. Go to the ITD website at itd.idaho.gov, click on Projects, then GARVEE Transportation Program.
