Open house on Wednesday will offer information on Gowen Interchange project
BOISE – To prepare for the replacement of the Gowen Road Interchange over Interstate 84 in Boise starting early next year, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will hold a public open house on the project Wednesday (March 27).
The open house will be from 4–6 p.m. at the Boise Factory Outlet Mall, Storefront #6830 (6806 S. Eisenman Rd., Boise, ID 83716). ITD will present preliminary design plans for the new interchange, gather comments and answer questions.
As part of the project, curb, gutter, sidewalks and bicycle lanes will be added on the Gowen Interchange. ITD and the City of Boise are working together to determine landscaping, lighting and other aesthetic features for the interchanges. ITD also will add a third lane in each direction on I-84 between the Broadway Avenue and Gowen Road interchanges. The project will reduce congestion, enhance safety and improve traffic flow through and between the Broadway and Gowen exits.

The current interchange was built in 1969 when approximately 5,650 vehicles traveled on I-84 near Gowen Road. Today, 44,500 vehicles travel over, under and on and off the Gowen Interchange each day. The new interchange design will improve traffic flow and the movement of vehicles on and off of I-84.
The I-84, Gowen Road Interchange replacement and adding the third lane on I-84 will cost approximately $31 million. The new interchange is expected to serve traffic needs through at least 2035. Plans also are under way to replace the interchanges at Meridian Road and Broadway Avenue.
