Perrine Bridge resurfacing project cancelled
TWIN FALLS – Planned resurfacing beginning next week on the Perrine Bridge has been cancelled in favor of new technology that will reduce the impact to drivers, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced. The next project is expected to take place in 2014 or 2015.
ITD engineers decided to alter the scope of the project and use a method of sealing the existing driving surface rather than replace it. The alternative is a newer technology that results in a shorter-duration project and lessens the impact of traffic and bridge activities.
The alternative method is being used in the area on select bridges to reduce the impact from weeks to days. However, the change in scope will require a new contract prior to completing any work.
“We hope to complete additional assessment of the bridge as a whole, prepare the surface sealing and repackage the work with additional maintenance projects over the next year or so,” ITD Bridge Manager Matt Farrar said.
During the coming months, additional inspection of the Perrine Bridge will be completed in preparation of the next contract for the driving surface and structural maintenance.
The first inspection is on Thursday (April 4). A portion of the inspection will close one southbound lane of U.S. 93 across the bridge between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. so crews may use a reach-all truck to inspect the underside of the bridge deck.
