Construction on U.S. 20 between Thornton and Rexburg starts Monday (May 6)

RIGBY - A highway resurfacing project on U.S. 20 between Thornton and Rexburg will begin Monday (May 6), the Idaho Transportation Department announced. The project, which includes a seal coat, is scheduled for completion in June.

Crews will resurface approximately 4.5 miles from just south of Thornton to the south Rexburg Interchange (Exit 332).

The project will strengthen and smooth the roadway for improved durability and riding comfort. It will involve breaking up and settling concrete pavement in a process known as "crack and seat." Crews then will overlay the road base with a blend of asphalt and crushed rock.

The highway will be reduced to one lane in each direction during construction, and the speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph.

Commercial transporters hauling loads wider than 14 feet need to contact resident engineer Wade Allen at (208) 745-5680 or staff engineer Bryan Young, at (208) 745-5682, 24 hours in advance to receive special authorization to travel through the construction zone.

Drivers should anticipate minor delays, merging traffic, uneven surfaces, construction workers and heavy equipment. When traveling through the project area, motorists should obey all traffic signs and flaggers where present.

The transportation department awarded the $4.6 million contract to Knife River Corporation’s southern Idaho division, based in Boise.
