I-86 restrictions begin today for resurfacing

BURLEY – A summer-long project to resurface 15 miles of westbound Interstate 86 in eastern Cassia County began today (Monday, May 6), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Crews will construct median crossovers near the I-86/I-84 junction and at the Raft River interchange near milepost 15. Traffic will be limited to a single lane in both directions at those locations until mid-September. Weather depending, westbound traffic will be shifted onto the eastbound lanes next week.

The project will consist of a cement and recycled asphalt base reconstruction followed by an asphalt overlay of the westbound lanes between the I-84/86 junction and the Raft River interchange (Exit 15). The contractor will finish with a chip-seal coat to protect and preserve the new surface after paving.

A 65-mph speed limit will be in effect throughout the construction zone, and a 14-foot width restriction will be enforced.

Western Construction, of Boise, is the contractor for the $9.43 million repaving project. A similar resurfacing project of the eastbound lanes was completed in 2011.
