Seal coat begins Monday on Idaho 24 near Kimama

SHOSHONE – Drivers can expect delays and loose gravel on Idaho 24 in eastern Lincoln County as crews seal coat about 12.5 miles of highway beginning Monday (July 22), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Work will be between the Lincoln/Minidoka county line near Kimama and extend west to near Sids Road. The roadway was paved in September 2012, but the seal coat was delayed to this summer due to temperature requirements.

A properly applied seal coat can add several years of service to the roadway by preserving the integrity of the asphalt and serving as a barrier to water and cracking. The surface also improves winter-driving safety by adding roughness for traction on snow and ice.

When crews are present, the road will be reduced to one lane and a 35-mph speed limit will be in effect. A pilot car will be in operation and drivers should watch for flaggers throughout the construction zone.

Motorists are urged to use caution. Observing posted speed limits and increasing following distance between vehicles will reduce the risk of windshield damage caused by loose gravel.

Western Construction, of Boise, is the contractor for the $3.18 million project.
