UPDATE: New FYA signal in Weiser Wednesday will be operating by 2 p.m.
BOISE - Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA) traffic signals are not new to the area - Fruitland and Payette both got one recently. Soon, Weiser can be added to
the list.
A new FYA signal will replace the existing left-turn signals at
the intersection of U.S. 95 and Park Avenue on Wednesday (Aug. 14). The
ITD signal crew will start work at 9 a.m. and the new FYA signals should be operational by 2 p.m.

“We
are setting up the timing plan so that when the pedestrian button is
pushed, the conflicting left turn will only get a green arrow
indication,” explained Southwest Idaho Traffic Engineer Kevin Sablan.
“The flashing yellow arrow will not be displayed simultaneously with
the pedestrian walk indication.”
An elementary school is located northeast of the intersection.
“The FYA signal is more efficient,” Sablan said. “It maximizes the green time allocated to through traffic, and reduces the frustration for drivers waiting to turn left.” Sablan also said the signal saves on motorists' fuel and time at the intersection.
The flashing yellow arrow means, "proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic."
The signal has four phases:
1. Green arrow represents a protected turn
2. Flashing yellow arrow - proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic
3. Solid Yellow arrow - prepare to stop
4. Solid Red arrow - stop
FYA signals are already in place in many southwest Idaho towns, and are added as part of new construction or when funds allow for a replacement, Sablan said. They have been added in recent years to intersections in Emmett, Mountain Home, McCall, Nampa, Fruitland, Payette and Nampa.
