I-84 Galloway Road Overpass near Sand Hollow damaged by overhead load
BOISE - The Interstate 84 Galloway Road Overpass, between Sand Hollow and Purple Sage, was damaged by an excavator being hauled on a trailer this afternoon (Monday, Sept. 23) requiring a lane closure and width restriction for traffic traveling over the bridge.
The ITD bridge inspection crews recommended the lane closure while the bridge is assessed for repair. The bridge girder is cracked on the bottom on both sides.
"Taking weight off the damaged portion is the idea behind putting all of the traffic onto the undamaged half of the structure," said ITD southwest Idaho Maintenance Manager Dan Bryant. "The engineers may determine a further weight restriction is needed when they have had a chance to analyze the damage but for now we can’t take chances with the safety of those traveling on and under the structure."
Temporary signals are in place at both end of the bridge to direct traffic, and a 15-foot width restriction is in place for drivers.
The bridge is at milepost 21.7. Sand Hollow is at milepost 20 and Purple Sage is at milepost 23.
