Chubbuck Diverging Diamond Interchange scheduled to open Monday morning

CHUBBUCK – Idaho’s first diverging diamond interchange is scheduled to open on Monday morning, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

The new interchange is designed to improve access to Interstate 86 from Yellowstone Avenue and from the interstate to Yellowstone.

A diverging diamond interchange offers significant benefits when compared to a traditional diamond interchange. The largest benefit is continuous left-turning traffic. Because traffic is directed to the opposite side of the bridge, there is no waiting for left turns onto the interstate. This eliminates a phase for traffic signals and eliminates the potential for crashes with left-turning traffic.

Drivers using Yellowstone Avenue are being advised that the overpass will be reduced to one lane in each direction this weekend. During the weekend, crews will be re-striping the lanes on the overpass, sealing the overpass deck and working on traffic lights.

News Directors, Editors:

A media day will be held this Sunday, Oct. 6, from noon to 5 p.m. at Chubbuck City Hall, 4727 Yellowstone Avenue. Transportation department staff will be available for interviews, and the video of the interchange will be shown.
