Traffic signals to be turned off temporarily on Idaho 48 in Rigby for upgrade Nov. 6

RIGBY - Traffic signals will be turned off temporarily to be upgraded at Idaho 48 (First South Street) and the U.S. 20 business loop (State Street) in Rigby Nov. 6, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Crews will deactivate the signals at 9 p.m. on Nov. 6 to upgrade lights. Signals will be reactivated by 7 a.m. the next morning.

After signals are deactivated, stop signs will be used to create a four-way stop at the intersection. Motorists and pedestrians should be aware of the traffic change and watch for maintenance workers and equipment.

Upgraded signals will feature the new flashing yellow arrow similar to one installed in August near Rigby High School. The flashing yellow arrow allows traffic to "proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic."

Upgraded signals have four intervals:

1. Green arrow represents a protected turn
2. Flashing yellow arrow – proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic
3. Solid yellow arrow – traffic change coming
4. Solid red arrow – stop

Flashing yellow arrows add the ability for a permissive move by drivers who wish to turn left when they can do so safely; they can make a left turn but must yield to oncoming traffic.

Studies show flashing yellow arrow signals are more efficient and improve safety. The signal also saves on motorists’ fuel and time at the intersection.
