ITD clarifies how flashing yellow arrows operate
LEWISTON - Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA) traffic signals are becoming commonplace throughout Idaho as a way of managing traffic more efficiently and safely at intersections.

The Idaho Transportation Department recently introduced a new signal in north Lewiston that uses a flashing yellow arrow, instead of the more familiar solid green ball, to facilitate left turns.

“The FYA signal is more efficient,” explains ITD traffic engineer Jared Hopkins. “It maximizes the green time allocated to through traffic and reduces frustration for drivers waiting to turn left.”

The new signal has four phases:

1.  Green arrow represents a protected turn, enabling motorists to turn left without interference
2.  A flashing yellow arrow means drivers should proceed with caution and must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians
3.  A solid yellow arrow warns the light is about to change to red
4.  Solid red arrows require motorists to stop, as they would at a solid red ball

Hopkins said flashing yellow lights save fuel and time spent at an intersection.

FYA signals are already in place in many southwest Idaho communities, and are added as part of new construction or when funds allow for a replacement.
