Abandoned bird nests on McCall’s Lardo Bridge take center stage starting Feb. 3

McCALL - Abandoned swallow nests on McCall’s old Lardo Bridge (circa 1931) will be removed and preventative netting installed to deter this year’s swallows from making Lardo Bridge their home, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. This is a necessary step to the eventual replacement of the bridge, expected to begin this fall.

From Feb. 3-28, Capitol Pest Management will be addressing the nests on the bridge and placing the exclusion netting. Traffic will be restricted to one lane from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Crews will be installing netting now before the barn swallows, cliff swallows and the violet green swallows return in the spring. Swallows are sparrow-sized birds that are federally protected.

The new bridge will accommodate one lane of traffic in each direction. The transportation department will use a design-build method for this project. Design-build is a streamlined process in which the design team and construction team work together simultaneously. This method allows for innovative methods of construction and results in quicker project completion. Lardo Bridge will be only the second design-build project in Idaho.
