U.S. 12 reopens as avalanche threat diminishes
IDAHO COUNTY – A stretch of U.S. 12 from Lowell to Powell reopened at 10:15 a.m. (PST) today (Thursday, Feb. 13), after closing yesterday as an avalanche safety precaution. No slides occurred during the closure, and the amount of rain and snow forecasted, which prompted the closure, did not happen.
Prior to this recent closure, the 61-mile stretch of U.S. 12 (milepost 100-161) last closed for an avalanche in Jan. 2008. That closure lasted for 15 days. The road also closed twice in Jan. 2009, but those brief closures were for avalanche danger and control work, not actual slides.
