UPDATE: Lower spring breakup speed limit on section of Idaho 41 begins Thursday
COEUR D'ALENE - New spring breakup limits will go into effect Thursday morning (Feb. 20) on a 31-mile section of Idaho 41, designed to protect the road and travelers until warmer spring weather can solidify the road base for heavier loads. The speed limit will drop from 55 mph to 30 mph.
Spring breakup is an annual occurrence on many Idaho highways on the heels of long, cold winters and the recurring “freeze-thaw” cycle.
The restricted section is from milepost 7.9 (junction with Idaho 53) to the junction with U.S. 2 at milepost 39.06. It goes into effect at 6 a.m. Thursday.
The limits put on these roads annually are designed to prevent significant damage to highways. Older highways can be especially vulnerable to the freeze-thaw cycle as moisture trapped below the surface may erupt through the top, or at least cause the driving surface to heave slightly. High speeds and heavy loads can cause soft spots to begin to wear, eventually breaking up and creating potholes.
Motorists are urged to be patient. In addition, drivers are cautioned against risky driving such as passing on curves and hills when they encounter slower truck traffic. Waiting for safe passing opportunities is encouraged to ensure everyone arrives at their destination.
