Avalanche Alley section of Idaho 21 will close at noon today for slide threat

BOISE COUNTY - The 12-mile stretch of Idaho 21 between the Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit will close at noon today (Thursday, April 3) as an avalanche safety precaution.

The area has received 13 inches of snow and an inch of water since yesterday, and has a 92-inch snow base at Banner Summit. Crews fear warm temperatures in the forecast today will lead to melting, which would make the snowpack unstable.

The notorious "Avalanche Alley" section is home to approximately 60 avalanche chutes and 90 percent of the avalanches in the state that affect highways.
