Construction on U.S. 20 north of Ashton begins May 27

RIGBY - Construction on U.S. 20 north of Ashton will begin May 27, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. The project is scheduled for completion in October. It will renovate the three-mile stretch of U.S. 20 for improved durability and riding comfort. Work also will include a seal coat.

Crews will reconstruct U.S. 20 between Dumpground Road and Sheep Falls Road on the Ashton Hill north of Ashton (approximately milepost 366 to 369), removing pavement and 18-24 inches of road base. They also will install drain pipes and place new base and asphalt pavement. The roadway will remain the same width.

Motorists can expect significant delays. Truckers are encouraged to detour to Interstate 15 in Bozeman and Butte, Mont., and to I-15 in Idaho Falls, rather than proceed along U.S. 20 through Island Park.
Drivers should anticipate slowing and merging traffic, uneven surfaces, construction workers and equipment. Motorists also are encouraged to obey all traffic signs.

Reconstruction is designed to reduce groundwater buildup beneath the pavement. Without proper drainage, water expands and contracts during freeze-thaw cycles, damaging the structural integrity of the highway.

The transportation department awarded HK Contractors Inc., of Idaho Falls, the $6.46 million contract.
