Broadway project reaches milestone Thursday night as southbound lanes reduced until 2015

BOISE – Traffic will begin using temporary lanes and traffic signals on Broadway Avenue Thursday night (June 5) as interchange construction reaches another major milestone, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Southbound Broadway will be restricted to one travel lane across the I-84 bridge until next year. The change will give construction crews enough room to work on the new bridge over I-84. Northbound Broadway will have two through lanes as usual, and turn lanes will be accessible from both directions.

“The decision to reduce southbound Broadway traffic to one lane and maintain two lanes northbound was made to minimize the impacts to the traveling public,” said ITD Project Engineer Dana Weiss.  “As always, we need all drivers to leave early, slow down and pay attention in the construction zone.”

Crews will re-stripe Broadway Avenue and move traffic into the new lanes between 8:30 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday. During the overnight transition, just one lane will be open in both directions on Broadway Avenue. Flaggers will direct traffic.

Shoulders will be reduced in some areas of I-84 during the next phase of construction. All lanes of I-84 will be open during the day, but lanes will be reduced at night (8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.). The work-zone speed limit is 55 mph on I-84 and 25 mph on Broadway Avenue.

ITD is replacing the Broadway interchange with one that will accommodate higher traffic volumes and more lanes on I-84. Construction is expected to be completed by late 2015.

Concrete Placing Company, of Boise, is the contractor for the $26.7 million project.
