I-84 traffic detoured to Federal Way this week as blasting continues at Gowen Interchange

BOISE – Interstate 84 and the Gowen Road Interchange will close from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday (June 24–26) as the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) continues to blast rock at Gowen Road.

To keep motorists a safe distance from the blasts, traffic will detour off I-84 at the Broadway and Eisenman interchanges and onto Federal Way.

Flaggers will direct traffic during the 2-4 hour detours. Click here for a map of detour routes.

•  Drivers going eastbound on I-84 will detour off at Broadway, then head east on Federal Way to get back on I-84 at the Eisenman Interchange.

•  Westbound traffic on I-84 will detour off the Eisenman Road Interchange, then west on Federal Way to get back on I-84 at the Broadway Interchange.

•  Gowen Road will close between Federal Way and Eisenman Road.

The Idaho Transportation Department began blasting at the Gowen Road Interchange last week to excavate basalt rock around the interchange. This hard rock needs to be removed as part of constructing the new interchange. ITD estimates blasting will require about 30 evenings of closures between June and August.

Message boards throughout the area will alert motorists of the coming work. The work-zone speed limit is 25 mph on Gowen Road and 55 mph on I-84.

For more information, please visit the project website at www.itd.idaho.gov/Goweninterchange.

ITD is replacing the I-84, Gowen interchange with one that accommodates additional traffic on I-84 and Gowen Road. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2015. Additional blasting will be scheduled in spring of 2015.

Knife River Corporation, of Boise, is the contractor for the $27 million project.
