850 West Road overpass to remain closed

BURLEY – The 850 West Road in Minidoka County will remain closed at the Interstate 84 overpass bridge until repairs to the bridge structure are complete, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

In cooperation with the Minidoka County Highway District, the overpass will remain closed until work to replace the concrete pier and repair the concrete pier cap is complete. All traffic is detoured to the nearest crossings at 1140 West Road to the west and east to Idaho 27 (North Overland) in north Burley.

The 850 West Road overpass was damaged during a fatal crash on June 13 when a westbound semi-truck hit and destroyed a concrete bridge pier in the interstate median. Both westbound lanes of I-84 were reopened to traffic on Thursday, June 19, after guardrail adjacent to the crash site was replaced.

Bridge plans and specifications for repair are being prepared for replacement of the concrete pier and repair to the pier cap. ITD is using an emergency contract to expedite the repairs, which is expected to begin later this summer. The bridge is temporarily being shored up by wood supports until the bridge repairs can be completed.

The initial cost of repairs will be state funded until the cost is recovered from the driver’s insurance.
