Blasting and I-84 detours continue this week (June 30 – July 2); resume after holiday weekend

BOISE – Interstate 84 and the Gowen Road Interchange will be closed from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday (June 30 – July 2) as the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) blasts rock at Gowen Road. The hard rock must be removed as part of constructing the new interchange.

During blasting, all traffic will be detoured off I-84 at the Broadway and Eisenman interchanges and onto Federal Way. Gowen Road also will be closed between Federal Way and Eisenman Road.

Flaggers will direct traffic during the detours, which are anticipated to be in place between two and four hours. Message boards have been placed throughout the area to alert motorists of the detour routes. The work-zone speed limit is 25 mph on Gowen Road and 55 mph on I-84.

“All blasting activities have been going very smoothly and are being conducted with the utmost safety,” said Merrill Sharp, ITD Project Manager. “ITD really appreciates the patience that drivers and surrounding businesses have been showing over the past few weeks.”

Crews will not work over the upcoming Independence Day holiday weekend (July 3 – 5). Work will start again the evening of Sunday (July 6). Blasting at the interchange will resume Monday evening (July 7).

ITD is replacing the I-84, Gowen Road Interchange with one that accommodates additional traffic on I-84 and Gowen Road. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2015. Additional blasting will be scheduled in spring of 2015.

Knife River Corporation, of Boise, is the contractor for the $27 million project.
