Heavy construction, new traffic impacts begin July 6 on I-84 in east Boise
BOISE —The Idaho Transportation Department will reach several major construction milestones next week at the Gowen and Broadway interchanges. Each milestone will affect traffic on Interstate 84 or local roads.
“The upcoming days and weeks will be busy for both workers and drivers. Both construction zones are operating under tight timeframes, heavy traffic conditions and limited space,” said ITD Resident Engineer Daris Bruce. “The most important thing we can do is to equip drivers with the information they need to be safe, plan ahead and avoid delays.”
Beginning Sunday (July 6), traffic impacts will include:
• Broadway Avenue Interchange traffic switch (Sunday, July 6): Traffic on Broadway Avenue will begin moving to the new east half of the Broadway interchange bridge at 7 p.m. Flaggers will direct traffic on Broadway Avenue from 7 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday in the interchange area. One lane will be open in both directions on Broadway Avenue.
• Evening I-84 closures for blasting (July 7-10; ongoing): I-84 will be closed between the Broadway and Eisenman interchanges from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. several evenings this summer while crews blast rock at the Gowen Road Interchange. The next closures are scheduled for July 7-10. The blasting also will affect traffic on Gowen Road and southbound Broadway Avenue. Click here for a map of traffic impacts during blasting.
• Broadway Avenue Interchange bridge demolition (Monday-Tuesday, July 7-8): I-84 will close at the Broadway Avenue Interchange Monday and Tuesday nights from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. while crews demolish the old interchange bridge. For the first two to four hours, I-84 traffic will be detoured between the Broadway and Eisenman interchanges due to the nearby blasting at Gowen. For the rest of the night, only I-84 traffic at the Broadway Interchange will be detoured. Click here for the detour map. The area will re-open as soon as the demolition and cleanup are completed; no later than 5 a.m. each morning. Broadway Avenue will be reduced to one lane in both directions on both nights.
• I-84 restrictions near Gowen Road Interchange (July 6 – October): From July to October, I-84 traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions around the clock along a 1.5-mile stretch west and east of the Gowen interchange. Eastbound through traffic will cross over to the westbound side, giving crews enough room to rebuild the eastbound bridge at the Gowen Interchange. Eastbound motorists intending to exit at the Gowen interchange must move into a dedicated exit lane after the Broadway interchange. The speed limit will be 45 mph on the dedicated exit lane. Click here for the detour map.
• Gowen Road Interchange bridge demolition (July 11-12): Gowen Road and the eastbound I-84 on- and off-ramps will be closed Friday and Saturday nights (July 11 and 12) while crews remove the eastbound I-84 bridge over Gowen Road. The closures will begin at 8 p.m. and end at 7 a.m. Click here for the detour map.
Exact closure dates, road closures and detour maps will be posted on digital message boards and online at www.itd.idaho.gov/GowenInterchange and www.itd.idaho.gov/BroadwayInterchange. ITD is replacing the Broadway and Gowen interchanges and adding a third lane on I-84 between the interchanges. Both projects will add capacity and help reduce traffic congestion. Construction will be completed in late 2015.
Concrete Placing Company and Knife River Corporation, both of Boise, are the contractors for the I-84, Broadway and Gowen interchange projects in east Boise.
