Eastbound I-84 restricted to three lanes from Meridian Road Interchange to Five Mile Road
MERIDIAN – The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will restrict eastbound Interstate 84 to three lanes from Meridian Road to Five Mile Road beginning tomorrow morning (Thursday, July 10). ITD plans to reduce lanes on the westbound side of this stretch of I-84 within the next few weeks.
The lane restrictions will give crews a larger work zone for improving the storm-drain system and paving the I-84 median. The work is part of a project to improve I-84 from Meridian to Five Mile.
Later in the project, ITD will completely reconstruct the two outside lanes originally built in the late 1960s.
“Over the past 40 years, ITD has managed and maintained the interstate to get the best value and longest life out of the pavement,” said ITD Project Engineer Jayme Coonce. “The improvements we are making to I-84 today will provide motorists with safe driving conditions for many years into the future.”
The lane restrictions from Meridian to Five Mile will be in effect around-the-clock until this winter, when the weather gets too cold for crews to work. In the winter, this stretch of I-84 will return to four lanes. Next spring, when weather gets warm enough for crews to continue work, I-84 will be restricted again to three lanes for the duration of the project, which is expected to be complete in late 2015.
“ITD urges everyone who is traveling on I-84 to leave early; and when driving through the work zone, please remember to slow down and pay attention,” said Coonce. “We expect restrictions to cause intermittent delays for traffic.”
Motorists can expect speed-limit reductions throughout the work.
ITD is reconstructing the I-84, Meridian Road Interchange and improving I-84 between Meridian and Five Mile roads. Concrete Placing Company, of Boise, is the contractor for the $50.8 million project.
