VIDEO: Broadway interchange bridge demolition successful; Gowen bridge will be demolished tonight and tomorrow night

BOISE – The eastbound Interstate 84 bridge over Gowen Road will be demolished tonight (Friday, July 11) at 10 p.m. The bridge demolition will continue Saturday night (July 12), the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced.

The Gowen eastbound I-84 ramps and Gowen Road will close for the demolition tonight from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and on Saturday from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Click here for a map of detour routes.

The Broadway Avenue Interchange bridge was demolished on Monday and Tuesday nights (July 7-8). Click here for a video of the Broadway demolition or here for photos and the story on the demolition.

Demolishing the existing bridges is the next step of replacing the Broadway and Gowen interchanges and widening I-84 between the structures.

“A successful bridge demolition requires extensive planning and an excellent crew,” said ITD Project Coordinator Merrill Sharp. “ITD was very pleased with the outcome of the Broadway demolition on Monday and Tuesday nights, and we expect the Gowen bridge demolition to go just as smoothly.”

Starting tonight at 10 p.m., eastbound through traffic on I-84 will be shifted to the westbound side, giving crews enough room to rebuild the bridge at the Gowen Road Interchange. Through October, I-84 traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions around the clock along a 1.5-mile stretch west and east of the interchange. Eastbound motorists intending to exit at the interchange must move into a dedicated exit lane after the Broadway interchange.

At the Broadway Avenue Interchange, traffic began using the new east half of the bridge Sunday night. The west half is still under construction.

Knife River Construction and Concrete Placing Company, both of Boise, are the contractors for the Gowen and Broadway interchange replacement projects.
