I-84 eastbound on-ramp at Gowen will close for a month beginning Monday, will accelerate construction

BOISE – The eastbound Interstate 84 on-ramp at the Gowen Road Interchange will be closed around-the-clock for a month starting at 5 a.m. Monday (July 28) through late August, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced. The ramp closure will help accelerate construction of a new on-ramp and reduce the number of interstate closures for rock blasting.

During the on-ramp closure, motorists will be detoured along Eisenman Road to the eastbound on-ramp at the Eisenman interchange. The detour route is expected to add about five minutes to a normal trip.

“Directing traffic around the Gowen on-ramp will allow ITD to combine the blasting into fewer evenings instead of many separate evenings,” said Merrill Sharp, ITD Project Manager. “It will also allow traffic to begin using the new on-ramp more quickly instead of using a temporary ramp.”

Blasting at the Gowen interchange – which is about halfway complete – is being done to excavate basalt rock to make room for widening Gowen Road and rebuilding the interchange. ITD is been removing approximately 100 truckloads of basalt rock around the interchange every day that blasting is done.

Additional blasting will be scheduled in spring of 2015.

Message boards throughout the area will alert motorists of the coming work. The work-zone speed limit is 25 mph on Gowen Road, 55 mph on I-84 and 45 mph on the I-84 Gowen eastbound off-ramp.

ITD is replacing the I-84, Gowen interchange with one that accommodates additional traffic on I-84 and Gowen Road. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2015.

Knife River Corporation, of Boise, is the contractor for the $27 million interchange project.
