Responsive to business needs, ITD builds temporary lane to reduce traffic backups at Broadway/Commerce in August
BOISE – Added as a response to business needs, a temporary northbound lane on Commerce (Broadway) Avenue south of Interstate 84 will help alleviate congestion during the next month of interchange construction, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. ITD added the lane last week based on concerns from local businesses about traffic delays.
The new lane, located between the eastbound I-84 ramps and the TA Travel Center, was removed in early July before the old interchange bridge was demolished. When local businesses contacted ITD about the added congestion, ITD did two things – added a recommended detour route for trucks, and painted a temporary northbound lane for the next month.
ITD will need to remove the additional lane in late August, when construction begins on the nearby sidewalks and pavement.
“We looked at the plans again and found a way to squeeze in another lane for the next month. Even for this short period of time, it is important to us to minimize impacts to the traveling public,” said ITD Project Engineer Dana Weiss.
Trucks south of the interchange are advised to enter I-84 at the Vista Avenue Interchange. The truck detour will remain in place until 2015. Click here for a map of the detour route.
ITD is replacing the Broadway and Gowen interchanges in east Boise and widening I-84 to three lanes in both directions between the interchanges. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2015.
