Bridge assessment and retrofit work on six I-84 bridges begins today
SHOSHONE – Six steel girder bridges along Interstate 84 in Gooding and Elmore counties will receive assessment and retrofit work beginning today (Monday, Sept. 8), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
The parallel I-84 bridges located over the Snake River at Glenns Ferry and near King Hill as well as the bridges over the Malad River near Tuttle, will undergo field inspections for about a week followed by retrofit work to start later this month. The retrofit project will add support to the gusset plates and welds, bearing stiffener locations, and other portions as necessary.
The inspection and retrofit work is not expected to impact traffic on I-84, however, minor lane closures may occur during retrofit work if use of a reach-all bucket truck is necessary. All work is expected to be completed by the end of November.
The Glenns Ferry and King Hill bridges, constructed in 1974, are multi-span, twin-girder structures with concrete piers. The Malad River bridges, constructed in 1975, are single-span, twin girder structures. All are unpainted, weathering steel with lateral bracing systems and welded lateral gusset plates. The inspection and resulting work will determine the type and quantity of retrofit work required.
Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. of Northbrook, Ill. is the contractor for the $552,000 contract.
