REMINDER: Full weekend closure of I-84 Meridian Road Interchange begins Friday (Oct. 17)
MERIDIAN – The Meridian Road Interchange over Interstate 84 will be closed to all traffic this weekend, from 10 p.m. Friday (Oct. 17) to 5 a.m. Monday (Oct. 20). The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) reminds motorists to plan ahead and choose an alternate route.
Crews will work around-the-clock over the weekend to remove old traffic signals, install new temporary signals, and pave connections between the current roadway ramps and the new interchange.
What you need to know:
- Meridian Road will be closed between Overland Road and Waltman Drive.
- I-84 will be open, but motorists will not be able to enter or exit at Meridian Road
- Motorists will be directed to use the Ten Mile Road Interchange or Eagle Road Interchange.
- Local and business traffic will not be allowed through the closure area.

The new interchange bridge is four feet higher than Meridian Road. Before traffic can use the new bridge, ITD must raise the elevation of the ramps and Meridian Road. The raised elevation allows for additional clearance underneath the bridge. Crews will bring in 12,000 cubic yards of fill and 2,000 tons of asphalt to complete the process.

“ITD has done extensive public outreach to ensure everyone in the area is aware and prepared for this weekend,” said Hollinshead. “We have personally visited businesses around the interchange to notify them about the closure and met one-on-one with those who may be most impacted.”
Hollinshead explained that ITD’s additional outreach activities have included mailing a notification postcard about the closure to residents and businesses around the Meridian Road Interchange. ITD has also met with key organizations including the City of Meridian, Meridian Chamber of Commerce, emergency service providers and others to coordinate for this weekend’s construction activities.
Looking forward, ITD plans to demolish the existing interchange bridge on the nights of Oct. 24 and 25. Shortly afterward, the new west half of the bridge will open and construction will begin on the east half of the bridge.
