UPDATE: Idaho 21 reopened after threat of avalanche lifted

BOISE--The 12-mile stretch of Idaho 21 between Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit reopened Monday Dec. 22 at 11:40 a.m., the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

High avalanche risk closed the roadway Sunday morning.

The section, known as Avalanche Alley, is home to approximately 60 avalanche chutes and 90 percent of avalanches in the state that affect highways. Last season, there were 124 avalanches, with nearly 50 percent reaching Idaho 21.

“The decision to close the highway isn’t taken lightly, and is due to the potential risk an avalanche may pose to people who both live, work and travel in the area,” said ITD District 3 Maintenance Supervisor Dan
Bryant. "During most closures, avalanches do hit the the highway."
