Rock scaling in aftermath of slide on U.S. 12 west of Orofino starts Friday morning, traffic impacted

LEWISTON - Crews will begin scaling the hillside Friday morning (Jan. 30) in a short section of U.S. 12 about three miles west of Orofino where a rockslide Wednesday brought down several tons of rock and debris near the road, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. The debris was caught by the roadside ditch before making it to the roadway.

Traffic will be stopped for 15- to 20-minute intervals beginning at 7:30 a.m. and continuing throughout the day.

Crews will be working to scale and secure the remaining rocks on the hillside above this two-lane section of road to protect against another slide caused by moisture in the air and the freeze-thaw cycle.

State crews will provide the traffic flagging for the contracted rock scalers.
