Break-up limits set on Idaho 53, Idaho 41 and Idaho 54 to protect highways
COEUR d'ALENE - Break-up limits have been imposed on sections of Idaho 41, Idaho 53 and Idaho 54 in northern Idaho to protect against potential damage due to pavements and soils weakened by the combination of freeze-thaw cycles and heavier vehicles.

Limits began yesterday (Thursday, Jan. 29) on Idaho 53 from milepost 0-14.3, Idaho 41 from milepost 8-39.06, and Idaho 54 from milepost 0-8 (junction with U.S. 95). Vehicles are limited to 30 mph and a 1400-lb. axle weight.

“The roads are showing very heavy signs of stress from the freeze and thaw cycle,” said ITD Coeur d’Alene N&W Maintenance Foreman Marc Johnson.

When subjected to high speeds and heavy loads, soft spots begin to wear, eventually breaking up and creating potholes.

Motorists are urged to be patient when traveling on highways where limitations have been placed.
