Paving on Challis Street in Salmon starts tomorrow (April 24)

RIGBY - Paving on U.S. 93 (Challis Street) in Salmon will begin tomorrow (April 24), the Idaho Transportation Department announced. Crews will mill (remove) approximately 2 inches of old pavement and replace it with 2 inches of new pavement.

Milling and paving will be on a test strip just south of Main Street. The transportation department will sample the strip for proper blend and compaction of asphalt and crushed rock. The contractor will then mill and pave Main Street, with work anticipated to start Monday, May 4, and be completed the following week.

The contractor has completed curb and gutter repairs between the Salmon River Bridge and Lemhi Road on Main Street. Workers also installed a ramp at the southwest corner of the intersection of Main Street and Church Street to meet requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

After resurfacing the 1.1-mile stretch of Main Street, crews will resurface 17 miles of U.S. 93 between Salmon and Rattlesnake Creek. The project is scheduled for completion in June.

During resurfacing on Main Street, travel will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction, with flaggers directing traffic through parts of the work zone as needed.

During resurfacing on U.S. 93 south of town, travel will be reduced to one lane, with flaggers directing traffic through the work zone. Motorists can expect delays.

Commercial drivers transporting permitted loads wider than 14 feet need to contact ITD Resident Engineer Wade Allen (208-745-5680) or Staff Engineer Bryan Young (208-745-5682) 48 hours in advance of travel for special authorization to pass through the construction zone.

Drivers should proceed cautiously, watching for construction workers and equipment, and obeying all traffic signs.

The transportation department awarded the $3.6-million contract to Western Construction Inc., of Boise.

The Idaho Transportation Department is responsible for all highways on the State Highway System – interstates, state highways and U.S. routes. All other roads are under the jurisdiction of the local, city or county entity.
