Gowen Road will be closed Friday night (May 8) as crews place girders for new interchange bridge

BOISE – On Friday night (May 8), crews will work overnight to place eight girders for the westbound side of the new Interstate 84 interchange bridge over Gowen Road, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced. During the girder placement, the eastbound I-84 on-and off-rampswill be closed, and Gowen Road will be closed from the westbound ramps to Eisenman Road. The closures will be in place from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Drivers can anticipate overnight lane restrictions on Gowen Road and I-84 throughout the week as crews work to prepare for the girder placement.

“Setting the girders for the new bridge is a major milestone for the Gowen Interchange project,” said Merrill Sharp, ITD Project Manager. “Crews will next work on building the deck of the bridge, which will be a significant step towards completing the new interchange.”

To give crews enough room to rebuild the bridge, westbound traffic on I-84 has been crossed over to the eastbound side for a 1.5-mile stretch west and east of the Gowen Interchange.

The I-84 Gowen Interchange is being replaced to accommodate more traffic. The project includes widening Gowen Road to five lanes from Federal Way to Eisenman Road and adding sidewalk and bicycle lanes. A new traffic signal will also be installed at the westbound off-ramp on Gowen Road.

ITD reminds drivers to slow down and pay attention in the work zone. The speed limit is 55 mph on I-84 and 25 mph on Gowen Road.
