Lane restrictions, ramp closure begin soon at I-84 Snake River twin bridges

DECLO – Traffic restrictions on Interstate 84 will be even tighter beginning this weekend in preparation for replacement of the first of two bridges over the Snake River, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Beginning Saturday (May 30), I-84 traffic will shift to the eastbound lanes and be placed into two-lane, two-way traffic over the Snake River and through the Declo interchange (Exit 216). Then, beginning Monday (June 1), the westbound on-ramp at the Declo interchange will close for about a month as crews construct a temporary on-ramp and start demolition of the westbound bridge.

During construction of the temporary ramp through late June, westbound on-ramp traffic will be detoured south on Idaho 77 to Idaho 81 through Burley, to enter I-84 at the Heyburn interchange at Exit 211.

A work platform also will be built between the twin bridges.

The westbound bridge over the Snake River is expected to open to traffic in early 2016. Demolition and construction of the eastbound bridge will follow, with final completion of the project expected in spring of 2017.

A 65-mph speed limit is in effect through the work zone. There is also a 12-foot width restriction. Oversized loads greater than 12 feet wide are required to exit prior to the construction zone and follow an approved alternate route.

Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction, of Draper, Utah, is the contractor for the $17.88 million project.
