ITD highway-safety efforts win pair of awards
BOISE - A pair of highway-safety initiatives, powered by internal partnerships at the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and between ITD and law enforcement, have been named award winners by a national motor-vehicle organization in regional competition.
The awards are listed below:
- Public Affairs and Community Education (PACE) Award – Indoor or Outdoor Print Advertising for “Chose to drink? Choose your ride.” to the Idaho Transportation Department
- Fraud Prevention and Detection – Law Enforcement Individual Award for “Officer Jermaine Galloway, Boise Police Department” to the Idaho Transportation Department
The honors, from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), were announced last week. ITD received the PACE award in early June at the regional AAMVA conference in Park City, Utah. The Fraud Prevention and Detection award for Galloway was also the AAMVA International winner, which will be presented at the Annual International Conference in August in Des Moines, Iowa.

The “Choose Your Ride” billboards and campaign involved the partnership between ITD’s Office of Communications, Office of Highway Safety and Idaho State Police. The campaign launched just before Thanksgiving 2014.
The objective was to develop a clear message with a strong visual to inspire discussion and decision-making to plan not to drive if you drink. ITD posted the message prominently on billboards along Idaho roadways from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, targeting the time when families are gathered and more individuals may be drinking at holiday celebrations. Besides the billboards, ITD also featured the artwork on the department’s website, Facebook and Twitter, in the news media, online and through mobile web ads.
“I could not have created the billboard without Mark Hall’s great photography, and good feedback from department staff in developing the campaign,” said Pauline Davis, the department’s graphic artist. “I am very appreciative of the team effort.”
It is the second award for “Choose Your Ride,” which also won an Idaho Press Club award a month ago for a first-place, public-service campaign.
According to the award email from AAMVA President and Chief Executive Officer Anne Ferro, “AAMVA’s awards program fosters a tradition of excellence in the motor vehicle and law enforcement community by honoring individuals, teams, and organizations who committed their time and resources to safety initiatives, outstanding customer service, and public affairs and consumer educational programs throughout North America.”

Galloway is a nationally recognized expert in fake identification prevention, education and enforcement. The information and training he developed has been used throughout the country. Because of the training and education developed by Galloway, several retailers are confiscating approximately 1,600 fake IDs a year. Galloway’s research included meetings and interviews with officials from ITD, Idaho State Police Alcohol Beverage Control, Idaho State Liquor Division and officials from other states.
