Delays and closures at I-84 Gowen Interchange June 12-19; consider an alternate route

BOISE – Beginning tomorrow (June 12) and continuing through next Friday (June 19), the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has a series of significant closures planned for the Interstate 84 Gowen Interchange and Gowen Road. Over the next week, drivers can expect nighttime lane restrictions and flagging in this area every night from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The impacts will begin with closing the I-84 eastbound on-ramp at the Gowen Interchange tomorrow (June 12) at 5 a.m. The on-ramp will remain closed 24/7 through Wednesday (June 17). In general, drivers will be detoured to the I-84 eastbound on-ramp at Eisenman Interchange via Eisenman Road during this closure.

Drivers should plan ahead for additional closures every night at the Gowen Interchange Monday through Friday (June 15-19). Prior to and during each closure, signage and flaggers will be placed along detour routes to direct and guide drivers.

The intersection of Gowen Road and Eisenman Road will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday nights (June 15 and 16).

  • Gowen Road will be closed in both directions between Eisenman Road and the I-84 westbound ramps from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday nights (June15-19)
  • The I-84 eastbound off-ramp at the Gowen Interchange will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday through Friday nights (June 17-19). On Thursday and Friday, pavement will be removed from the roadway between the stop bars of the off-ramp and Gowen Road. For these two days, motorists will drive across a gravel surface for approximately 150 feet.
  • The I-84 westbound on-ramp at the Gowen Interchange will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Thursday night (June 18).

“Multiple closures are necessary because Gowen Road is being lowered three feet,” said ITD project manager Merrill Sharp. “There are layers of hard basalt rock under the existing road surface that need to be drilled and removed so crews can continue constructing the planned improvements.”

By next Saturday (June 20), all changes will be implemented on Gowen Road between Eisenman Road and the I-84 westbound ramps.
