Transportation department launches new, interactive map tool

BOISE – A new, online interactive map will help Idaho residents learn about a variety of highway projects that are planned in their communities, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Called the Idaho Transportation Project Map, it allows users to focus on the areas of Idaho they’re interested in, and choose the specific project types they want to learn about.

It can be viewed at: www.itd.idaho.gov/itip/draft.htm.

It offers information on a variety of project types, including pavement preservation, bridge restoration, state rail and bridge preservation.

Those who are using the interactive map can choose specific project types to populate it. For example, someone interested in bridge restoration or pavement preservation can choose those categories. The map is then populated with where those projects are planned during the next five years.

“The Idaho Transportation Project Map is a convenient and easy way to track what the transportation department will be doing during the next five years,” said Erika Bowen, an engineer manager in the transportation department’s Planning Services section. “It saves time by allowing the user to select the types of projects they’re interested in and want to learn about.”

At the top of the map, users will see the years 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 listed. The map can be populated with projects planned for all five years, or users can choose a specific year.

It also allows comments to be submitted electronically from it. A Submit Comment button can be found in the upper left-hand corner.

The map also includes a tutorial. In the lower left-hand corner, a How To…Hints button explains the map’s features.

The map is a component of the 30-day public comment period for the Idaho Transportation Investment Program. The investment program is a five-year “roadmap” for planning and developing transportation projects, including highways and bridges, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, highway safety and transportation planning.
