Seal coat projects begin on sections of Idaho 24

SHOSHONE - Sections of Idaho 24 will receive seal coats the next few weeks, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. Seal coats prolong the life of highways and provide better traction for motorists.

Seal-coating between Dietrich and Shoshone (mileposts 61-67) begin Monday (June 20); a seal coat will be added between Minidoka and Kimama (mileposts 18-36) beginning Wednesday (June 22).

Flaggers and pilot cars will direct motorists through the work zone. Delays of 10-15 minutes can be expected. The speed limit on Idaho 24 will be reduced in some areas, depending on surface conditions.

Motorists are reminded to drive slowly and keep a safe distance from other vehicles to reduce risk of windshield damage.

Crews will work Mondays through Fridays, although inclement weather could require weekend work.

Seal coat projects begin with a layer of asphalt and then a cover coat of gravel. The highway is rolled and traffic allowed to help pack the surface before final brooming removes excess gravel. A light fog-coat of asphalt is applied several days after brooming to help seal the surface. Permanent lines will be added later.

The projects are expected to be complete by the end of June.

Kloepfer, Inc. of Paul is the project contractor for these two segments of Idaho 24 and for two other seal coat projects planned later this simmer. Total cost of the seal coats is approximately $816, 000.
