Speed limits on Idaho 33 in Driggs to be adjusted Monday (Aug. 31)

RIGBY - The posted speed limits on Idaho 33 in Driggs will be adjusted Monday (Aug. 31).

Crews will lower the 35 mph speed limit between Ross Avenue and Harper Avenue to 30 mph and will increase the 25 mph speed limit between Harper Avenue and Wallace Avenue to 30 mph. The speed limit in the downtown core of Driggs between Wallace Avenue and Short Street will remain 25 mph.

Crews also will install flashing beacons to create a new 25 mph school zone near the Driggs Elementary School, which will be in effect when the beacons are flashing. The beacons will be programmed by the school district to run in coordination with the school calendar.

School and city officials asked the transportation department to conduct highway-engineering and safety studies along the stretch, results of which prompted the changes.

The transportation department uses these types of studies to determine what motorists consider reasonable, convenient and safe for existing conditions. Speed limits are intended to supplement driver judgment and are set at a level that studies indicate will be observed voluntarily.

Motorists should take extra care while highway crews change signs and install flashers along the route.

Idaho State Police and local law enforcement officers will patrol the highway during and after the speed-limit transition.
