Lane restriction on Broadway Avenue near Boise River will start Monday night

BOISE – Drivers are being advised to watch for a lane restriction on southbound Broadway Avenue between Myrtle Street and the Boise River starting Monday, August 31. The far right lane on that section of Broadway Avenue will be restricted for about two months as crews relocate water and power lines.

Once the lane is restricted, drivers turning right from Myrtle Street onto Broadway Avenue will have approximately 100 feet to merge with traffic.

The relocation of water and power lines is part of preparations to remove and rebuild the Broadway Avenue Bridge over the Boise River. Construction of the bridge could begin as soon as this December.

Improvements include increasing mobility with three lanes in each direction, increasing pedestrian safety with wider sidewalks on both sides of the bridge, adding bicycle lanes, adding belvederes that offer views of the Boise River, an improved connection with the Greenbelt on both sides of the Boise River and repaving Broadway Avenue between University Drive and Myrtle Street.

"While the temporary closure is in place, the transportation department will work with ACHD and local jurisdictions to monitor traffic flow," said Daris Bruce, a transportation department engineer. "We are also looking at ways to minimize impacts during major events like Boise State football games."

“Once completed, the Broadway Avenue Bridge will serve as a gateway to downtown Boise,” said Bruce. “The new bridge will be wider, offering pedestrians and bicyclists a safe way to get to Boise State University football games and other events. In addition, having three lanes in each direction on the bridge will allow more vehicles to use it.”
