Race Creek Bridge replacement begins Monday, public meeting on project Wednesday

LEWISTON - Construction of a new, longer and wider bridge across Race Creek on U.S. 95 near Riggins will begin Monday (Sept. 14) and continue through mid-February 2016. The public-information meeting to discuss the project is scheduled for Wednesday (Sept. 16).

Crews will replace the existing 72-foot-long concrete structure, built in 1932 and located between milepost 196.6 and 196.9, with a 102-foot-long, pre-stressed concrete bridge. The new bridge will also be wider (40 feet wide instead of 24 feet wide). The existing bridge is classified as functionally obsolete because it is too narrow.

The public-information meeting for this project will be held upstairs in the Riggins Community Center, at 121 Lodge Street. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. Mountain time. The contractor will be on hand to answer questions.

The project also will include replacing nearly 1,500 feet of guardrail with concrete barrier, and constructing approaches to the side roads.

Contractors are scheduled to work Mondays through Fridays, from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. U.S. 95 will be reduced to a single, 16-foot-wide lane in the project area during construction.

Temporary traffic signals will be used to control traffic on both ends of the construction area and on Race Creek Road at its intersection with U.S. 95.

West Company Inc., of Airway Heights, Wash., was awarded the $2.3 million contract.
