ITD will initiate demolition of Broadway Avenue bridge Monday morning (Jan. 4) with removal of historic cornerstone

BOISE – On Monday (Jan. 4), the Idaho Transportation Department will initiate the first phase of removing the Broadway Bridge. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., ITD, along with the city of Boise, will cut out and move the historic cornerstone of the existing bridge, which commemorates the structure’s 1956 completion date.

The closure of Broadway Avenue, from Cesar Chavez to Myrtle, will be in place by Monday morning and detour routes will be in effect. Click here for a map of motorist and Greenbelt detours.

Removing the cornerstone marks the start of construction to rebuild the nearly 60-year-old bridge. The process to demolish the Broadway Avenue Bridge and clear debris from the work zone will take approximately 20 days.

“The 1956 bridge cornerstone will be stored in Julia Davis during construction,” said Boise’s Arts and History Department Director Terri Schorzman. “Once construction is complete, ITD and the city will place this historic artifact near the new Broadway Bridge so it can continue to be a part of our community’s heritage.”

The new Broadway Bridge is expected to be complete in fall 2016. Knife River Corp. is the contractor.
