Demolition of Broadway Bridge begins replacement project

BOISE – Construction on Broadway Avenue will swing into full gear this week as crews demolish the bridge over the Boise River. The process of removing the existing bridge will take about 20 days to complete – after which, work will begin to build the new structure. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2016.

“For everyone’s safety, ITD reminds the community Broadway Avenue at the Boise River is now an active construction zone,” said ITD District 3 Resident Engineer Daris Bruce. “The construction zone has been restricted and ITD asks that everyone follow the detour routes and plan extra time.”

The 20-day demolition process will require crews break apart and remove the existing structure section-by-section.

“The Boise River under the bridge has been channeled, which will allow debris to fall safely to the ground, rather than into the water,” said ITD Construction Manager Merrill Sharp. “Crews will clear away debris as each section of the bridge is demolished, and the contractor will fully restore the riverbed.”

During the demolition process, neighbors can expect to hear increased noise levels from heavy equipment, back-up alarms, jackhammers and breaking of concrete between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Construction activities will occur 24/7.

ITD reminds drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to leave early, know your route and plan extra time for travel.

A construction camera of the work zone has been set up at: http://ibeamsystems.com/private/idbroadway/. The camera updates every ten minutes.
