ITD imposing spring breakup limits this week on stretches of U.S. 95, Idaho 57

COEUR d'ALENE - The Idaho Transportation Department will impose load restrictions and reduced speed limits on a 10.5-mile stretch of U.S. 95 beginning at 6 a.m. local time tomorrow morning (Tuesday, Feb. 9), and all of Idaho 57 starting the following morning Wednesday (Feb. 10). The limitations are designed to minimize damage to roads caused by heavier vehicle loads using the route during the freeze-thaw cycle.

U.S. 95: Commercial vehicles 10,000 lb. Gross Vehicle Weight and greater will be restricted to 30 mph and legal axle weight from milepost 522 (junction of Idaho 1) to milepost 532.5 (Canadian border).

Idaho 57: Commercial vehicles 10,000 lb. Gross Vehicle Weight and greater will be restricted to 30 mph and legal axle weight from milepost 0 (junction of U.S. 2) to 37.3 (end of highway).

ITD imposed similar restrictions on three other northern Idaho routes Jan. 22:

Idaho 41: Commercial vehicles 10,000 GVW and greater will be restricted to 30 mph and 14,000 pounds per axle, or legal axle weight, whichever is less, from milepost 7.897 (Jct. of Idaho 53) to milepost 39.058 (U.S. 2 Oldtown).

Idaho 53: Commercial vehicles 10,000 GVW and greater will be restricted to 30 mph and 14,000 pounds per axle, or legal axle weight, whichever is less, from milepost 0 (Washington state line) to milepost 14.24 (U.S. 95).

Idaho 54: Commercial vehicles 10,000 GVW and greater will be restricted to 30 mph and 14,000 pounds per axle, or legal axle weight, whichever is less, from milepost 0 (Washington state line) to milepost 15.51 (Bayview).

When subjected to high speeds and heavy loads, soft spots begin to wear, eventually breaking up and creating potholes.

Motorists are urged to be patient when traveling on highways where limitations have been placed.
