U.S. 95 reconstruction west of Sanders, funded by new revenue, returns April 18

COEUR d'ALENE - Reconstruction of a 3.9-mile section of U.S. 95, just west of Sanders in southern Benewah County, is expected to resume April 18 following a 2015 start and a shutdown of the project during winter weather. The work is critical to upgrade this deficient roadway section with safety, drainage and pavement improvements. The project is expected to finish by this fall.

Culvert work began last year, but the realignment work, paving and shoulder work all remain.

The pavement-restoration project, from Smith Creek to Sheep Creek, will improve the alignment of a winding section of highway to increase visibility and allow vehicles to safely travel at the posted 60-mph speed limit. The project also will reduce future maintenance costs and reduce accidents and injuries.

The primary partners/stakeholders are Benewah County, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, and the unincorporated town of Sanders.

The Idaho Transportation Board advanced a group of 27 projects in 2015 using funds allocated by the Idaho Legislature in the state’s first transportation-revenue increase in nearly two decades. Doing so enabled the advancement of dozens of other critically needed road and bridge projects statewide in the future. This is one of that initial group of projects.

Apollo Inc., of Kennewick, Washington, is the contractor on this $11.6 million project.
