High winds continue; drive with care

RIGBY - High winds continue across the Arco desert and the upper Snake River Plain. Motorists should drive with extreme care.

The area is experiencing sustained winds of 40 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning at 1:45 p.m. (Monday, May 9), which is in effect until 8 p.m.

Reduced visibility caused by blowing dust closed Interstate 15 between Idaho Falls and Roberts at approximately noon today.

Northbound traffic is being detoured from I-15 to U.S. 20 in Idaho Falls and then from U.S. 20 in Rigby to Idaho 48, which runs to Roberts and I-15.

Southbound traffic is being detoured from I-15 to Idaho 48 in Roberts and then from Idaho 48 to U.S. 20 in Rigby, then south to I-15 in Idaho Falls.

The Idaho Transportation Department expects to reopen I-15 tonight, assuming winds subside and crews are able to remove soil accumulations from the highway.

Drivers are encouraged to visit 511.idaho.gov or call 5-1-1 for the latest highway conditions.

Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more not only are dangerous for motorists but also can lead to property damage, according to the National Weather Service.
