Ramp closure begins Monday (June 13) at I-84 Snake River Twin Bridges

DECLO – Replacing the first of two Interstate 84 bridges spanning the Snake River is nearing completion, but to facilitate paving of the approaching roadway, the contractor will close and remove the temporary westbound on-ramp at the Declo Interchange beginning Monday (June 13). The ramp will remain closed until the westbound bridge is open to the public later this summer.

The westbound looping on-ramp at the Declo Interchange (Exit 216), which was constructed in 2015 as a temporary interstate access during the first phase of the project, will be closed and removed before paving activities at the east end of the bridge commence. Paving the permanent on-ramp, as well as reconstructing and paving a section of mainline I-84, will take place in the coming weeks.

All traffic entering westbound I-84 will be detoured south on Idaho 77 to Declo, then west on Idaho 81 and U.S. 30 through Heyburn, to rejoin I-84 at Exit 211. The westbound off-ramp and both eastbound ramps at the Declo Interchange will remain open during this phase of construction.

The westbound Snake River bridge is expected to be open to traffic by early August. Several construction activities must be completed before the bridge can be opened, including concrete roadway paving, asphalt paving of ramps and median crossovers, installation of curb and guardrail, installation of roadway lighting, and roadway striping.

Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction, of Draper, Utah, is the contractor for the $17.88 million project to replace the two I-84 bridges crossing the Snake River.  Traffic will shift to the new bridge once completed, followed by demolition and construction of the eastbound bridge. All work is expected to be complete by July 2017.

A 65-mph speed limit remains in effect throughout the work zone. There is also a 12-foot width restriction. Oversized loads greater than 12 feet wide are required to exit prior to the construction zone and follow an approved alternate route.
