I-84 paving project in Jerome County begins next week

SHOSHONE – A full-width paving project on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 in eastern Jerome County is scheduled to begin Monday (June 13). The resurfacing project between the Northside Canal and the Kasota Road interchange (Exit 201) will increase the life expectancy of the roadway and improve smoothness.

Crews will apply a resurfacing treatment called a Stress Absorbing Layer of Straight Asphalt (SALSA). The seven-mile section of I-84 will be covered with the stress-absorbing layer of liquid asphalt oil, overlaid with asphalt pavement, and completed with a seal coat.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, utilizing the median crossovers to put all traffic on the westbound lanes for the duration of the paving work. A 70-mph speed limit and a 15-foot width limit will be in effect throughout the construction zone.

The project also includes paving the ramps at the Kasota Road interchange (Exit 201), replacing guardrail, fence and delineators at designated locations. An epoxy-resin sealant will also be applied to the concrete driving surface of the bridge spanning the Northside Canal.

Knife River Inc., of Boise, is the contractor for the $3.2 million project. The paving portion of the work will be complete by the end of June followed by the bridge after the July 4 holiday. The final seal coat and striping is scheduled to take place in late August.

A similar paving project is scheduled for the westbound lanes in 2017 and will be completed under a separate contract.
